If they want to see something as real even though they know it isn’t… well, then they see it as real. Easy.
They edit out what they don’t need to see, and they fill in the missing pieces to make it real.
Because the truth is: nothing is perfect, but perception makes it seem like it is.
For example, I remember when Dr Who started on the BBC.
It was in the 70s, and back then, special effects were not very special at all.
You could see the panels and plywood and staging - you could literally see how things were built.
Take the Dalek’s, for instance - those rolling, conical robots.
They very much looked fabricated, but did it matter?
Oh no… !hey were scary as could be!
These days though, that’s no longer good enough.
Everything has to be polished, realistic, convincing.
Anything to remove the impression of imperfection.
And while that can make for beautiful viewing, I do think it’s a pity.
The more perfect something looks, the less your imagination is asked to fill in the gaps.
And it’s in letting our imagination work for us, that we perceive beyond the physical and the obvious. Life gets to be so much richer, that way.
So today, I invite you to stop for a moment, click that button, and look.
Not just look at the painting… but look at what old Flash Gordon triggers in your memories, in your fantasies, in your history and imagination.
As you sit and drink in the view and you let your mind run free…
What, actually, is it that you see…?
